Citizens, Science, and Birding Explore how people gain a love for birds, and how this love leads them to contribute to our ongoing understanding of the birds with whom we share our yards, gardens, and indeed, our lives! Participants will learn about the longest running community science project in North America, find out how local community members are helping us learn about birds, and discover how they, too, can contribute to science and conservation in their own homes. Outdoor walks and hands-on activities are part of the course. Instructor: Lorna Harder is a dedicated conservationist specializing in birding, prairie restoration, and environmental education. She taught at St. Croix schools and Hesston College and served as Curator of Natural History at Kauffman Museum. Since retiring in 2014, she volunteers with Kauffman Museum, the Dyck Arboretum, and the Kansas Native Plant Society. Lorna and her husband live on a farm in Harvey County, where they focus on prairie restoration and sustainable land practices to protect the environment for future generations.
